The Emperor’s Ascent: Orikum, Marmiroi & The Llogara Pass

Explore the remains of ancient Orikos, one of the most strategic coastal settlements of the region, located near the Pasha Liman lagoon and the entrance of the Bay of Vlorë.

Instead of a simple archaeological walk, we focus on the “Tactics of Caesar.” Your guide explains why this location mattered: a protected bay, a naval corridor, and a landscape where terrain shaped the movement of armies and empires.

Stand inside the ancient site and imagine Orikos not as ruins, but as a living military and maritime gateway.

III. The Hidden Sanctuary: Marmiroi Church

The Experience:
We continue toward the isolated Church of Marmiroi, a 12th-century Byzantine monument standing quietly near the foot of Karaburun Mountain.

IV. The Tunnel Crossing: From Bay to Mountain

After Marmiroi, we return to the vehicle and drive through the tunnel toward the Llogara side, moving from the coastal world of Orikum into the mountain atmosphere of Llogara National Park.

The Refinement:
This is the “Vertical Transition.” The landscape changes quickly: from lagoon and coastline to pine forest, fresh air, and the dramatic slopes of the Ceraunian Mountains.

V. Llogara Panorama: The Balcony of the Ionian

A scenic stop at the Llogara panorama, where the view opens toward the Ionian coast and the wild southern Riviera.

The Refinement:
Here we introduce the Ceraunian Mountains — the ancient “Thunder Mountains” — and explain why this pass has always been one of the most dramatic natural borders in Albania.

VI. Caesar’s Path: The Emperor’s Trail

The Experience:
From the area near Hotel Alpin inside Llogara National Park, we begin a light mountain hike along Shtegu i Cezarit / Caesar’s Path, reaching Caesar’s Neck for a short panoramic stop.

The Refinement:
This is the heart of the tour: the “Footsteps of Caesar.” The trail is connected with Julius Caesar’s passage in 48 BC during the Roman civil war, while pursuing Pompey. The Moment:
At Caesar’s Neck, guests feel the strategic power of the pass — a place where mountain, sea, and history meet in one view.

VII. The Culinary Peak: Flavors of Llogara

Lunch/tasting stop: around 1 hour

The Experience:
After the hike, we return to the restaurant area near Hotel Alpin for a relaxed tasting of Llogara specialties.

The Refinement:
A simple but authentic mountain food experience, focused on local dairy, seasonal dishes, mountain herbs, and slow-cooked regional flavors.

The Moment:
A warm table after the hike — the perfect ending before returning to Vlorë.
